PROTOTYPE FOR SUSTAINABLE RESIDENCES IN THE PERIPHERIES - PROSPER

Inclusive ecology

The project will be implemented in Ohrid and its surroundings, especially in the settlement of Daljan at the Koselska River basin. This area is a beautiful nature that is constantly being destroyed by waste and illegal landfills. In this area, the awareness of the population is at a very low level, which results in environmental degradation.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
Local communities in southwest region are divided across ethnic lines and do not have opportunities to develop genuine interaction and regain trust among each other. Young people study in different shifts so they do not meet, and cannot understand each other as they do not even speak the others’ language. CSO sector in the southwest region of Macedonia is weak and also divided by ethnic lines. Multi-sectoral local partnerships and coalitions where CSO’s can join efforts with public and private sector are rare in target region.
Youth Leadership
Young people today are faced with numerous challenges that previous generations did not have. Access to many information’s, excessive consumerism, laden with physical appearance, diseases caused by sedentary lifestyle, money imposed as a major value in life, popular are those who are materialistic and wealthy, not those who are honest and hardworking. In order to this chaos, the youth remains the challenge how to cope and how to make the best decisions for their lives.
Local Discussion: Improving current policies for youth employment
Access to (self)employment
Macedonian Enterprise Development Foundation (MDF) in collaboration with the Local Development Agency Struga (LDA Struga) are implementing the project "Access to (self) employment".
Towards an alternative tourism
MEDF in consortium with the Center for managing change and crises Partners Albania and local partner Local Development Agency Struga (LDA) in the period from 15 April 2013 to 15 December 2014 implementing the project: "Towards an alternative tourism".
World Heritage in Young Hands-IPA Cross Border Programme Macedonia-Albania
The project’s overall objective is Albanian and Macedonian secondary school youth to learn to value diversity and protect the world’s and their own cultural and natural heritage; teachers to be better prepared to foster intercultural collaboration and understanding amongst their students. The specific objectives are to support the establishment of a joint action between Macedonia and Albania in implementation of the UNESCO World Heritage Education Programme in select schools, with in-school activities based on the WHYH Teacher Kit.

Digital Stories

Digital stories are a form of transfer of personal experiences, knowledge, attitudes, events from different areas and different themes, where their contents are told orally, and visualized by means of pictures, videos, effects and accessories. Workshops for Digital stories provide an interesting concept to work in groups, while everyone has the opportunity to develop their own skills and express their thoughts. Participants worked in pairs and 5 different stories emerged in duration from 2 to 5 minutes. The idea was the participants to work together and develop a story that can be displayed from a different perspective and read with a different voice and different language. During the 3 days, participants had the opportunity to learn to photograph, to search for and edit photos, recorded and processed audio material, video editing and publishing the finished video online.

Supporting the Rural Tourism Development in the Jablanica and Ohrid Lake Region

Although the Program for Rural Development (IPARD) is available, local inhabitants do not have the capacity to benefit from the money made available by the European Union. Implementation of these programs is impossible without human capacity and there is a danger that those who need them most will not use them. Inhabitants of the rural areas surrounding Lake Ohrid and Jablanica lack knowledge and skills in order to develop rural tourism related businesses. The unemployment rate in some of the villages is more than 50%. Depopulation is one of the major problems these villages are facing. Municipalities do not have the capacity to resolve these negative trends. There is no strategy or action plans for development of nature and rural tourism.

These puppet shows are part of the project "Just Don’t!". The main objective of this project is to help residents of rural communities in Struga and Vevcani to recognize when they act discriminatory and, when they are discriminated on the base of ethnic and religious backgrounds and to offer solutions on how to change such behavior. Puppet plays will be shown in front of students from primary schools in Struga, Vevcani and surrounding villages. Macedonian National Basketball Team & LDA Basketball players visiting the US Embassy
Young basketball players from the club LDA Struga were officially welcomed by the U.S. Ambassador, Mr Paul D. Wohlers, at the U.S. Embassy in Skopje. The official reception was attended by members of Macedonia's national basketball team on the occasion of their great success-high fourth place in the recently completed European Basketball Championship in Lithuania.
LDA Youth Basketball Club Struga, with a donation from the American embassy, in July this year participated in an international basketball camp in Montenegro. Young players have returned with excellent impressions and were very proud basketball top names shared their career experiences with them. Ambassador greeted young basketball enthusiasts and enabled the meeting with members of Macedonia's basketball team.
"The team has inspired the whole nation, especially with the way the season was happening. Macedonians from this team, whether from Strumica, Kocani, Kavadarci, Skopje or from New Orleans were united and played for Macedonia. Employees at the embassy, and all of Macedonia in recent weeks cheered strongly the national basketball team. I'm sure you've attracted the attention of many Europeans, especially the Croats, Greeks, Georgians, Finns, Slovenians and Lithuanians", said Ambassador Walhers, himself, and while speaking to his guests, wore a neck scarf that said Macedonia on it.
Comic about preventing domestic violence
The following comic is part of the project “Strengthening the capacity of local institutions in preventing domestic violence”, implemented by the Local Development Agency Struga. The strip contains information about recognition of violence and provides specific guidance to respond to it in an appropriate way. Through our many years of work on this topic, we came to the conclusion that the preventive action is necessary from their early age. It is especially important to young people to talk openly and without prejudice to their families. The strip is adapted to the age of readers and a pictorial manner clearly conveys the message of nonviolent communication.
Local Development Agency - Struga is a civil organization that aims to improve the quality of life for residents of the municipality of Struga region. IPA Cross-border cooperation “Women Crossing Borders For Change”
The overall objective of the project is to enable and expedite social integration of long-term unemployed women and young women entering the workforce from urban and rural areas in the Macedonia-Albania cross-border region. We intend to achieve this by increasing women’s capacities for employment through leadership and management trainings, experience-exchange study trips and cross border meetings.
With the activities in this project we will work on 3 levels of strengthening the cross-border cooperation. First level will be cooperation between civil society organizations. Second level is establishing women-to-women cooperation. Third level is institutional level - we shall make sure that representatives from welfare institutions participate on the cross-border conferences and study trips so they will start to get to know each other and eventually develop more contacts with the similar institutions from the other side of the lake.
A Step Towards Gender Equality
Democratic societies in which women and men have equal opportunities tend to be more developed compared to societies that still operate under a patriarchal system. In Macedonia, as a patriarchal society, it is of utmost importance to support women and strengthen their capacities. Thе goal of this project is to assist women to become more active in pursuing their rights, especially at the local government level. Through Women’s Forums, training and conferences, we will bring together a wide range of stakeholders that will discuss topics about gender equality.
Macedonian – Albanian Youth Cooperation

Life Skills Program will be on the project and will focus on increasing self-esteem, critical thinking and ability to solve problems. We will use experiential learning where young people will be involved in an active way.

Development of rural communities through sustainable tourism
About the project: In the last decade in Struga it has become obvious that it is not diversity itself which is the cause of conflict, but the intolerance and misconceptions of “the others”. Only when the differences among the local communities are considered as advantage, we will arrive at unity, increased awareness and respect for the values of the “other’s” culture. This project aims to help local community to overcome prejudices based on ethnicity and religion. Target group are young artists, representatives from NGO, public and private sector from the Municipality of Struga.
Unity In Diversity
About the project: The main objective of this project is to strengthen the interethnic dialogue and cooperation between the citizens in Struga. To achieve that, public debates were organized where citizens could discuss openly on various topics related with traditions, prejudices and religious tolerance. Furthermore, the citizens were given opportunity to continue the discussions on more detailed level on the intergenerational camp where they had trainings and they were inspired to take responsibility for their own lives and to become positive role models in their communities. And finally, we have organized two multicultural events in two famous café-bars in Struga where we exhibited the photos from the photo competition which goal was to demonstrate the advantages of living in multiethnic communities.

Economic Empowerment Of Women
According to the latest research in the contemporary economy and business sphere, so called typical women skills are more in demand: cooperation rather than competition, team-work rather than an individualistic approach, consultations rather than compromises, flexibility instead of strict working times and caring for the environment rather than “business as usual”. Still, very small numbers of women in Macedonia are taking the steps to start up a business. Long-term crisis and patriarchal surroundings have contributed to this situation. Many unemployed women stay at home and are economically dependent and that makes them more vulnerable to other forms of discrimination such as family violence. The main goal of this project was to encourage women to take initiative and improve their financial situation.
