PROTOTYPE FOR SUSTAINABLE RESIDENCES IN THE PERIPHERIES - PROSPER
PROSPER aims to spark change and innovation by focusing on issues of re-examining the sustainability of artist residencies and recontextualizing peripheries as spaces of growth and development, as well as creating connections between organizations from the cultural and tourism sectors.
Inclusive ecology
Our country is a signatory to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and is one of the few countries that has ratified this convention.
The project will be implemented in Ohrid and its surroundings, especially in the settlement of Daljan at the Koselska River basin. This area is a beautiful nature that is constantly being destroyed by waste and illegal landfills. In this area, the awareness of the population is at a very low level, which results in environmental degradation.
Gender analysis of social policy and equal opportunities programs in the municipality of Vevchani
With this project, we will contribute to solving the problem of not recognizing the importance of including a gender perspective in municipal policies and programs in order to achieve gender equality. This will be achieved by conducting a gender analysis and assessment of the social protection program and the equal opportunities program, determining gender indicators on the basis of which we will monitor the implementation of the programs for 2022, and preparing gender budget initiatives that we will present to the Equal Opportunities Commission and the municipal council. Based on the gender budget analyses, we will propose changes to the programs in accordance with the identified challenges for women and men as end users of the programs and achieving gender equality.

"И старите можат"
Целната група на проектот беа возрасни лица над 60 години од општините Охрид и Струга. Овие лица живеат сами или со фамилиите во семејните куќи. Нивната социјализација е ограничена на поблиската фамилија(доколку имаат среќа фамилијата да им е блиску) и соседите. Голем дел од старите лица се осамени бидејќи децата им се во странство и доаѓаат многу ретко. Охрид е град со најголема стапка на исселување во Македонија (податоци од Држ. Завод за статистика).

Decade of Belonging – Celebrating Diversity (ongoing)

ABOUT THE PROJECT
Local communities in southwest region are divided across ethnic lines and do not have opportunities to develop genuine interaction and regain trust among each other. Young people study in different shifts so they do not meet, and cannot understand each other as they do not even speak the others’ language. CSO sector in the southwest region of Macedonia is weak and also divided by ethnic lines. Multi-sectoral local partnerships and coalitions where CSO’s can join efforts with public and private sector are rare in target region.

Youth Leadership

Young people today are faced with numerous challenges that previous generations did not have. Access to many information’s, excessive consumerism, laden with physical appearance, diseases caused by sedentary lifestyle, money imposed as a major value in life, popular are those who are materialistic and wealthy, not those who are honest and hardworking. In order to this chaos, the youth remains the challenge how to cope and how to make the best decisions for their lives.

Local Discussion: Improving current policies for youth employment
Welcome to the event and meet the participants: Address the need for special policies for youth in our society; Identify distinctions between the measures used for employment while working with an employer versus self-employment...

Supporting the Rural Tourism Development in the Jablanica and Ohrid Lake Region
The overall objective of this project is to support the development of sustainable nature and rural tourism in the Lake Ohrid and Jablanica region by helping local inhabitants to start-up and manage small tourism related businesses. The southwest region of Macedonia and its natural characteristics, rich cultural heritage, and protected areas are a very good base for the future development of tourism. Lake Ohrid is the most famous tourist destination in this region. All current investments and efforts on the behalf of the public and private sector are focused on the cities (Ohrid and Struga) and rural parts are largely ignored.

Although the Program for Rural Development (IPARD) is available, local inhabitants do not have the capacity to benefit from the money made available by the European Union. Implementation of these programs is impossible without human capacity and there is a danger that those who need them most will not use them. Inhabitants of the rural areas surrounding Lake Ohrid and Jablanica lack knowledge and skills in order to develop rural tourism related businesses. The unemployment rate in some of the villages is more than 50%. Depopulation is one of the major problems these villages are facing. Municipalities do not have the capacity to resolve these negative trends. There is no strategy or action plans for development of nature and rural tourism.

Comic about preventing domestic violence

The following comic is part of the project “Strengthening the capacity of local institutions in preventing domestic violence”, implemented by the Local Development Agency Struga. The strip contains information about recognition of violence and provides specific guidance to respond to it in an appropriate way. Through our many years of work on this topic, we came to the conclusion that the preventive action is necessary from their early age. It is especially important to young people to talk openly and without prejudice to their families. The strip is adapted to the age of readers and a pictorial manner clearly conveys the message of nonviolent communication.

Local Development Agency - Struga is a civil organization that aims to improve the quality of life for residents of the municipality of Struga region. IPA Cross-border cooperation “Women Crossing Borders For Change”

The overall objective of the project is to enable and expedite social integration of long-term unemployed women and young women entering the workforce from urban and rural areas in the Macedonia-Albania cross-border region. We intend to achieve this by increasing women’s capacities for employment through leadership and management trainings, experience-exchange study trips and cross border meetings.
With the activities in this project we will work on 3 levels of strengthening the cross-border cooperation. First level will be cooperation between civil society organizations. Second level is establishing women-to-women cooperation. Third level is institutional level - we shall make sure that representatives from welfare institutions participate on the cross-border conferences and study trips so they will start to get to know each other and eventually develop more contacts with the similar institutions from the other side of the lake.

A Step Towards Gender Equality

Democratic societies in which women and men have equal opportunities tend to be more developed compared to societies that still operate under a patriarchal system. In Macedonia, as a patriarchal society, it is of utmost importance to support women and strengthen their capacities. Thе goal of this project is to assist women to become more active in pursuing their rights, especially at the local government level. Through Women’s Forums, training and conferences, we will bring together a wide range of stakeholders that will discuss topics about gender equality.

Guidelines: Rural Tourism - From Idea To Realization
About the project: Jablanica region has very huge potential for developing environmental-friendly tourism with its great geographical position, rich cultural heritage, natural resources and pleasant climate. Huge unemployment in the villages in the Jablanica Mountain is great challenge in this region. The poverty is influencing the locals, and they rather leave the villages. The development of environment-friendly forms of tourism will have double effect: on sustaining the environment and on developing local economy.
Educational Materials For Children In The Area Near National Park “Jablanica”
About the project: For successful and long term solution of the problem of environmental protection requires it to be understood by the youngest population. Children should be familiar with the environment in which they live and to spot the inseparable relation between people and nature.
Support To National Park “Galicica”
About the project: There are more than 5000 inhabitants living on the territory of the National park Galicica, in 17 villages along the coast of Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa. They use the natural resources of the park traditionally. Junipers from blue juniper (Juniperus communis) and mountain tea (Sideritas raeseri) are among the most popular forest products. Wild herbs such as thume (Lat.Thymum), yarrow (Lat. Achillea millefolium) immortelle (Lat. Helichrysum) and other plants grow on the vast pastures, and the mountain is especially rich with bars, berries etc.
Promotion Of Organic Agriculture For Protection Of The Ohrid And Prespa Lake
About the project: Health and environmental protection are becoming main priorities at a global and local level. People living in urban communities are especially concerned about how to obtain healthy food and protect their health. The media informs the public about the consequences of diseases, but does not inform them about locally available healthy food. Usage of pesticides in conventional agriculture negatively influences the health of consumers and the biodiversity of the lakes.
Tourist Info Point
About the project: The establishment of the Tourist Information Centre is the first project of its kind in the Struga region. The main objective of TIP is to promote Struga as a tourist destination, a place where local and foreign tourists can find information about the city and region and to help local craftsmen to promote their traditional products and services.
”Theatre Of The Oppressed” - Educative Toll For Behavior Change
About the project: Welfare of society depends on being in families. Principles that are based on family relationships are inevitably reflected in the whole society. Children who grow up in a healthy environment where there is respect between parents, love and cooperation, continue to apply these values outside of their home. In contrast, children who witness domestic violence can later become abusers or to accept as normal the role of victim. Young people often do not recognize and define domestic violence as a negative phenomenon, because violence is still a taboo topic that is not being talked about. The project aims to teach young people how to recognize and effectively deal with negative behaviors in the family. Target group are young people of 14-18 years from the municipalities of Struga, Ohrid and Vevcani.

Center For Support Of Persons With Intellectual Disabilities “Poraka Nova” – Struga
About the project: In Struga there was no institution to care on daily basis for people with severe intelectual disabilities. Therefore we established Center for support of persons with intellectual disabilities in 2005. In the first two years it was funded by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, and in 2007 it also got funds from the Municipality budget. In december 2007 it has been transferred to other premises that offer more space and can accept more people. The main goal of the project is to help social inclusion of people with intelectual disabilities, to offer a space where they can interact, learn to become independent and gain basic life skills.
Strategic And Action Planning
About the project: The concept of sustainable development is the new paradigm for development, promoted by the World Summit for Sustainable Development organized by the UN in 1992. This concept gives a human dimension to development and is demanding continuous reflection on the relationships between people and nature. Intergenerational solidarity is the key and the only possible option for long-term development.

“Think Globally, Act Locally”.

Strategic planning in the municipality is a common vision developed upon a given methodology that can provide the citizens a clear picture about the opportunities and choices for the future of their communities.
Pilot Research: ”Energy From Bio-Mass”
About the project: Biomass is organic matter that can be efficiently used as an energy resource. Unlike the fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) that are created in long period of time (more than 300 million years) biomass is a renewable source of energy because plants renew themselves every year. Among the other renewable sources of energy such as solar, wind and geothermal, the energetic potential of biomass is the biggest. Beside indirect financial and other long-term benefits, we should mention the environmental effect of using the biomass: the usage of classical fossil fuels is decreased.
Modernization Of City Library
About the project: The Library Premises of the Public Library "Braka Miladinovci" in Struga were neglected and not suitable to the needs of the citizens. Using the experience of our Finnish partners and the model of libraries in Finland, we engaged in helping the transformation of the current library into a modern multifunctional center. The main goal of the project is to transform and develop the library into a multifunctional citizens’ information centre and a meeting point, benefiting from modern IT - technology.
Improvement Of Urban Environment
About the project: One of the major problems of the inhabited areas is the amount of communal waste is increasing. The waste needs to be disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner. This can be achieved with the development of an integral system for waste management, with rules about selection, mineralization and stabilization of the waste. No state or people can resolve the global problem of pollution by themselves and, on the other hand, nobody is so weak and small for his contribution to the prevention of pollution to not reflect positively on global level.
Cost Benefit Analysis For Golf Course
About the project: Throughout the world the development of golf courses is usually an investment by private investors, municipal authorities, a combination of both, as well as other types of ownership (military courses, hotel resort courses, private membership clubs, etc.). The objective of this project is to provide initial information regarding public opinion on the building of a golf course in this region. Regarding the results of the analysis, recommendations should be given to local authorities for possible future directions of action, above all, how different forms of partnership among various stakeholders in order to extract maximum impact for the community.
Placement Of City Maps In Partner Municipalities In Ohrid/Prespa Region
About the project: Municipalities of Struga, Vevcani, Debarca and Resen have huge potential for developing sustainable forms of tourism (such as eco, cultural, rural, religious, archeological) with their great geographical position, rich cultural heritage, natural resources and pleasant climate. But at present, majority of tourists visiting these municipalities, are not aware about all the other places that are worth visiting in the broader region, as there are no public maps to facilitate it. To make these hidden places available to every tourist it is of urgent importance to place maps on all the entrances and exits of these municipalities.

Development of rural communities through sustainable tourism

About the project: In the last decade in Struga it has become obvious that it is not diversity itself which is the cause of conflict, but the intolerance and misconceptions of “the others”. Only when the differences among the local communities are considered as advantage, we will arrive at unity, increased awareness and respect for the values of the “other’s” culture. This project aims to help local community to overcome prejudices based on ethnicity and religion. Target group are young artists, representatives from NGO, public and private sector from the Municipality of Struga.

Unity In Diversity

About the project: The main objective of this project is to strengthen the interethnic dialogue and cooperation between the citizens in Struga. To achieve that, public debates were organized where citizens could discuss openly on various topics related with traditions, prejudices and religious tolerance. Furthermore, the citizens were given opportunity to continue the discussions on more detailed level on the intergenerational camp where they had trainings and they were inspired to take responsibility for their own lives and to become positive role models in their communities. And finally, we have organized two multicultural events in two famous café-bars in Struga where we exhibited the photos from the photo competition which goal was to demonstrate the advantages of living in multiethnic communities.

Economic Empowerment Of Women

According to the latest research in the contemporary economy and business sphere, so called typical women skills are more in demand: cooperation rather than competition, team-work rather than an individualistic approach, consultations rather than compromises, flexibility instead of strict working times and caring for the environment rather than “business as usual”. Still, very small numbers of women in Macedonia are taking the steps to start up a business. Long-term crisis and patriarchal surroundings have contributed to this situation. Many unemployed women stay at home and are economically dependent and that makes them more vulnerable to other forms of discrimination such as family violence. The main goal of this project was to encourage women to take initiative and improve their financial situation.
