Welcome to Struga
Each town has its own history and its population is proud of it. That makes the people honour the history and pass it on the next generations. We are talking about the town situated on Lake Ohrid, about the town’s very own history where each stone in the old pavement and each shell in the clear transparent water of the lake is part of the pyramid of the history of our town of Struga. This is a town of the artisans, towns of the educators Dimitrija and Konstantin Miladinovi as true symbols and eternal source of the Slavonic culture and literacy. During its long, rich and bright tradition, this town experienced periods of great development of the culture and economy, but also many times it had been conquered by numerous conquerors.
The town of Struga is situated in the far south-west of the Republic of Macedonia, and existing through centuries it has created its own unique physiognomy of historical, architectural and aesthetical aspect.
Struga, the town of the two white waters is located 689m above the sea level, at the foot of the mountain Jablanica, in the Ohrid-Struga valley, on the northern shore of Lake Ohrid, next to the place where the river Crn Drim outflows from Lake Ohrid, i.e. it is located on both sides of river Crn Drim.
Although surrounded by high mountains, the Ohrid-Struga valley is well connected with the neighbouring regions and it is very accessible.
The international airport Ohrid is 7km far from the town.
The municipality of Struga comprises of 50703ha or 1/3 of the total land shore of the lake and half of the total land of the valley.

Throughout the year, there are 80 sunny days when the temperature is above 25°C. The average annual temperature is 11,5°C and the average summer temperature is 20,5°C.
In winter the average monthly temperatures are above 0°C which gives an opportunity for a pleasant stay in this period of the year too. The average rainfalls of the regions are approximately 759 mm annually.
Periods of windy and calm weather are changing throughout the day especially in the summer period.
The mornings are characterized with the domination of the northern winds and the silence. The conditions are completely different in the afternoons when the winds from the south and south-east disturb the silence.
LAKE OHRID
Lake Ohrid is between 4-10 millions years old and it is the oldest lake in Europe and one of the oldest in the world. It has a tectonic origin and was created in tertian period before the glaciations.
The lake pool has approximately 50 billions cubic meters of water and because it is a sub-tropical lake it never freezes.
The colour of the water near the shore is olive-green, and in the middle of the lake it is sky-blue. The water is very clear because it originates from lime-soil springs. Therefore, the transparency is high, up to 21,5m.
The temperature of the lake water, its clearness and transparency, the air temperature, its location surrounded with natural attractiveness, rich in fish, all of that attracts tourists as a magnet and make this lake the most visited place in Macedonia.
Is there anything more beautiful and magnificent then the outflow of the river Crn Drim from Lake Ohrid? This natural phenomenon conquers and fills the souls of everyone, possesses and purifies them with the most beautiful feelings. The river flows slowly through the town, as it does not want to disturb the visitors that walk on the promenades, fascinated by its crystal clear water. In the evening the river looks even more beautiful due to the light of lampposts which is rejected from the river water. On its way to the Adriatic Sea, two men-made lakes are formed: Globocica and Shpilje, surrounded by wonderful landscapes.
The river Crn Drim, with its gorge and the two men-made lakes, is becoming a more and more interesting place for recreation not only for the fishermen but also for all those who want to enjoy its beauty.
It is interesting to mention that the old name of Struga, Enhalon comes from the waters of river Crn Drim, i.e. from the eel that lives in Lake Ohrid and reaches to the Atlantic Ocean to reproduce. That is the famous honeymoon journey of the eel that goes from the river Crn Drim and then through the river Drim (which is formed from the rivers Crn and Bel Drim in Albania) comes to the Adriatic Sea. And its journey does not end there, but it goes through the Ionic Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, through Gibraltar as far as the Sargas Sea. There the eel meets its partner, reproduces and many small eels are spawned. There the mother eel dies, and after several years, as a biological memory that exists in them, the young eels using the same journey as that of their mothers’, come back to Lake Ohrid. All this exists for centuries.
